Add colour to your garden by starting in the conservatory

There is more than one way to add colour to a garden. While hanging baskets of geraniums or planting stout little daffodils are a surefire way to add a shock of primary colour to an outdoor space dominated by green, there are more subtle, permanent and frost-resistant ways to add a dash of elan.

And the colours you choose to introduce to your garden can say a lot about you. Los Angeles-based outdoor living expert Debra Prinzing is an advocate of colour in the garden, and says it is essential for mood.

"Anyone who has walked into a room painted in a dull or garish palette knows the power of colour," she told Houzz. "Colour intuitively influences our emotions, whether we're in a soothing spa environment of an electrifying casino. In a garden landscape, colour plays an equally powerful role."
